Stay up to date on Detroit entrepreneurs, events, research and more.
The more time I spend in Detroit the more I realized what’s going on here. It feels like South of Market in Silicon Valley 20 years ago. So much potential. So much energy. So much hope.
Detroit is making itself known as an entrepreneurial hub. At Endeavor Detroit, we’re committed to leading the high-impact entrepreneurship movement because we believe that at the heart of Michigan’s continued economic growth are scalable companies. Innovation, problem-solving, and passion are at the forefront of entrepreneurial success, and characteristics we believe the companies below have in common.
Jool Health is a digital health solution that integrates the science of the impact of purpose to enhance the lives and performance of individual users and organizations through their mobile and web-based platform. Founded by Vic Stretcher, a professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and Director for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship, Jool Health was born out of years of the founder’s own research. The company recently secured a $4.5 million Series Seed preferred round with the intention of using that money to advance product development, marketing, and sales efforts.
Melissa Butler started The Lip Bar in her kitchen in Brooklyn, New York, six years ago. Her first nationwide appearance on Shark Tank taught her the importance of tenacity, which has now led her to run a million dollar business. The Lip Bar is transforming the way we think about beauty in Target stores across the country and direct to consumer. The over one million dollar company is putting affordable, inclusive beauty on the map in the form of what’s called “The Lippie.” Melissa has managed to build a community of empowered women of all backgrounds by showcasing the beauty in every customer and capitalizing on social media.
The startup to watch is the one watching over you. Censys is a security analysis tool that helps researchers find the internet’s vulnerabilities by tracking the devices connected to it. They are taking the information security game to the next level. The company was developed by the creators of ZMAP at the University of Michigan, which is the most widely used tool for internet-wide scanning and has helped identify some of the most critical internet-scale vulnerabilities on the planet. Though Censys does have competition, what sets them apart from the rest is their research and academic study on the subject of internet security. With the founders of the celebrated Duo Security as early investors and avid supporters, Censys is looking to secure a Series A round in 2019. Technical advances are on the horizon and this company is just getting started!
May Mobility is grabbing the future by the wheel with their autonomous vehicles. These electric self-driving shuttles are already being deployed in Michigan and Rhode Island and will be used to help solve traffic congestion problems in cities across the country. The shuttle is innovative, yet understands that not all people are excited for driverless cars due to safety concerns. They have combated that potential deterrent by keeping their shuttles to 25 mph or less, on a limited route, and always including a human in the front seat to take control if necessary. The 6 passenger, green and white shuttle is the first to roll-out to the market. Their model is imperative to the data and overall future of self-driving cars. It’s no surprise Dan Gilbert did a pilot program with his employees before it went public.
The healthcare industry has been tremendously transformed by technology and entrepreneurial innovation and DocShop Pro is an example of that innovation. The company is streamlining the inventory management process in order to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability of healthcare practitioners. Their intuitive order platform can successfully prevent any practice from running out, overstocking, or paying too much for necessary operational supplies. The company has only been around since 2016 and is already a multi-million dollar business with plans to raise growth capital in the near future.
We’re excited to see these local, cutting-edge companies work to accelerate high-impact solutions to the problems facing our communities. Be sure to keep an eye on these companies as they continue to grow and scale in Michigan!
